Our time at the Bird Sanctuary flew by, we will continue to investigate some of the topics that came up this week. Thank you to Uyen, Mary-Ann, Zoey and Lynette for spending the morning with us. Talk about the field study with your child. Some Science terms that came up are: scat, omnivore, predator, prey, and camouflage. Here are also a couple pictures to help guide your discussion. What is happening in the picture? What is the goose making? What did you learn about the following animals? (Bonus: Which duck is the female one? How do you know/why?) More pictures from today: *REMINDER:
-Home Reading exchange tomorrow One important aspect of Kindergarten is learning to deal with our feelings. This week we focused on how we can be kind to others and ourselves. We revisited this book a couple times.
Discuss with your child: -How can you show kindness to other students during exploration time? -How can you show kindness to the teachers during lessons? -How can you show kindness to yourself? (ie. eat healthy, get lots of exercise, get good sleep) -How can you show kindness to your family? *REMINDER: -Inglewood Bird Sanctuary Field Study on Monday, April 30th -Please bring 1 clean jar (medium size) with the label removed to school by Friday, May 4th for a special project We have been reading some books about Spring in preparation for our field study at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. One idea that keeps coming up is that baby chicks are born this time of year. We chose a robin today for our weekly drawing tutorial. Can you name the parts of a bird? Better late than never! Spring is FINALLY here. Ask your child what they think they will see in the Spring time, we will be doing some investigating in the next couple weeks. With the weather warming up, we will be spending more time outside. Some of these activities include: working in the outdoor classroom, outdoor gym time and community walks. Please make sure that your students have proper outdoor footwear every day.
*REMINDERS: -library exchange tomorrow Thank you to all who came out to student led conferences. The kids were so proud to showcase their work! I hope you got a glimpse of some of the learning that makes up our Kindergarten day. Some of the students were disappointed that they couldn't share exploration time with you so I promised to put some pictures up for you. Have a great weekend!
Students have been working hard on developing their superhero story. This week, we created story boards (things that happen/events in our story). Today students had to give their story a title. We also spent time sharing our stories with a partner.
*REMINDERS: -No library exchange this week due to book fair set up. -Student led conferences tomorrow Thursday (3:30-7:30pm) and Friday (8:00-10:00). Students have decided that they would like to share their superhero stories, their journals and a math game with their families. -Book Fair will be open to families during student led conference hours (library) -No school on Friday Last week we focused our work around the idea of story telling. After reading several books, the students and I came brainstormed things that make a good story. Now we are trying to incorporate these things into our superhero stories. Ask your child what they think the most important part of a story is.
*REMINDERS: -Book Fair is coming to our school this Thursday, April 19 (NO library this week)- More details to come -Student led conferences this Thursday (3:30-7:30pm) and Friday (8:00-10:00am). Your child will have the opportunity to share with you some of the things they are working on in school. This time will be open house format and will take place in the classroom. This week we are continuing our work with our superhero dolls. The wool artist brought back the tent that the Kindergartens made before spring break and it is now the perfect backdrop for creating our superhero stories. Before Spring break, each student created a superhero that serves as a "protector of the land". We have been learning about some of the environmental problems/concerns that our planet is faced with today. Some ideas that the kids came up with are: -"protector of the sea" (superheroes have powers to collect all the garbage in the ocean so that sea creatures will be safe) -"protector of the forest" (superheroes stop people from cutting down trees because it destroys the habitat of animals and we also need trees to have clean air to breathe. One superhero has a magic wand that makes trees) -"protector of endangered animals" -"protector of cats that get stuck in trees" (this superhero specifically saves cats) -"protector of the land" (some of these superheroes are in charge of telling people to put their trash in the right place, some even have magnet hands/bodies to collect metal scraps) -"protector of forest fires" (this superhero can put out fires in a flash with a powerful sprinkler on top of her head) Today, we started to talk about the elements of a story. We focused on the character(s) (our superheroes) and the setting (where our story takes place). After some brainstorming and playing with our dolls, students were asked to create a background setting for their superhero with loose parts around the classroom. Ask your child about the setting to their superhero story. *REMINDERS:
-Library books due tomorrow -No toys from home allowed at school -On Thursday April 12 students are encouraged join Canadians across the country in wearing a jersey to honour and remember the victims of the Humboldt Broncos. Students are welcome to wear a jersey of any type, regardless of sport. If they do not have a jersey they are also welcome to wear green or yellow, the team colours of the Humboldt Broncos. We had a very successful week of lessons over at Acadia Pool. I was so impressed with how independent the students were in the change room by the end of the week! Thank you so much to Shawn, Zoey, Jodi, Shivaughan and Jim for helping out at the pool. Your help was greatly appreciated.
