With the support of Mr. W, students practiced taking pictures of each other today. They were encouraged to practice focusing by holding the iPad steady and tapping on the object so that the picture doesn't turn out blurry.
Here are our photographers in action today: Over the past few weeks, the Kindergarten's have been encouraged to add signage/labels to their creations and buildings during exploration time. We emphasize the importance of documentation in the Science Program and this is also a great way for students to practice printing letters and sounding out words. If you have trouble reading their kid writing that is spelled phonetically (for the most part... we are still practicing), I wrote their words at the bottom. * REMINDERS:
-library books due tomorrow -please look for the "Byblos Bakery" newsletter in communication folders tonight (if you cannot bring the assigned ingredient, please let me know) -Mr. W (photographer in residence) will be back tomorrow to work with students Music is always a highlight in our day. As I'm sure many of you have heard, the Kindergarten's have been working hard with Ms. Hebenton on 'The Billy Goats Gruff'' play. The students reenacted this fairytale and added sound effects at different points of the story, they had to pay close attention to make sure that right instruments were being played. They also practiced using expression and took turns acting out the different characters and roles. This week, our class preformed the play to Ms. Pond's class. Everyone did a fantastic job! *REMINDERS:
-If you haven't done so already, please return library books tomorrow -Parent teacher conferences on Thursday (3:30-7:30pm) and Friday (8:00am-12:00pm), please book appointments through your MyCBE account -No school on Friday due to conferences ![]() In Kindergarten, students have been reflecting on what makes them unique and special. For the past two weeks, we have been focusing on some of the physical characteristics that make up who we are. We've completed two self-portraits (one of just our faces and the other is full body). Here are the completed self portraits of their faces. It took a few days to complete this project, students worked off a black and white photograph of themselves and we did each part of the face step by step. Can you tell which one is your child? The Kindergarten students did great on their first extended field day this year! THANK YOU so much to Aaron, Charlene, Shivaughan, Jeremy, Christina, Lynette and Leslie for accompanying our class today. Having so many volunteers gave me peace of mind that the students were safe and well taken care of. I appreciate the time you put in today and I hope you enjoyed your experience. I know this field study will be one that the kids remember for a long time.
The students were SO excited as the bus got closer to the core, I overheard some counting the overpasses as we drove under them, others pointing out familiar landmarks they have seen before and one boy in total amazement when he saw a parking lot that was four stories high! There was a sense of wonder as we got off the bus and suddenly became surrounded by these very big and tall buildings. The students had the opportunity to practice some of their photography skills today. As the groups toured along Stephen Ave, students used the mini iPads to capture photographs of things that looked interesting to them. They practiced zooming in and out, using terms that they learned this week, "macro and micro." In the gardens, students sketched objects that they were curious about. We will go over their findings in their journals together next week to see where the learning should go next. Here's a glimpse of our day downtown: Today we explored a new way of representing numbers. "Tally Marks" are a quick way of keeping track of numbers. It also shows groups of five in a different way. Have a look at the game we introduced today. *REMINDERS:
-Please return library books tomorrow if you haven't done so today -Extended Hours for Field Study on Friday (Jan 19). Dismissal will be at 1:20pm. TOPP Kid's is closed on this day as well. -Parent Teacher Conferences next Thursday (3:30-7:30pm) and Friday (8am-12pm). On-line booking begins this Friday Today, we incorporated some Math into Morning Message. Ask your child to explain this "bar graph" to you. Math Challenge: How many people were in class today?
As I reflect upon student's work in exploration this past week, I am amazed at how much more complex and elaborate their work is compared to the first few months of Kindergarten. Students are also using more Scientific literacy when explaining their work during sharing time. A few times a week, students have the opportunity to talk about their work in front of the class. As we looked through pictures and videos this week, students were using words like: "stabilize, foundation, base, and secure" to explain to their classmates their process and thinking while creating. During sharing time, I have also noticed that more students are offering feedback and suggestions on how to solve problems that their classmates have encountered while building. This demonstrates great listening and critical thinking skills! I observed a few students go back to exploration the next day to readjust and add on to what they've already created. What a great start to 2018! Here is some of their work from Exploration time this week: Yesterday, we worked on building number towers. Students are getting so good at grouping, we decided that a bigger challenge was needed. After building number towers from 1-10. Students had the option to try to solve the problem of the week. How many blocks did you use in total? Many of the students were eager to find the answer. Some students got frustrated because their towers would knock over when they tried to count them. Here are a few strategies the kids came up with to help with that problem. We are still working on solving this challenging problem. If you have blocks/lego at home, encourage your child to give it a try! You can even help them draw it out. It could be. a fun math game to work on together.
This was the Morning Message today. Ask your child what is happening with the word, "gym."
