-Assembly tomorrow (10:00-10:30am) in the gym. All are welcome! Today a couple students observed that our tiny guest in the classroom started to look a bit different. Not only have they gotten a lot bigger but some of them started to change in colour and appearance. Today each student shared what they think the mystery creature is. Some of their answers were: centipede, scorpion and caterpillar. The reason some of these creatures look different today is because they are changing! In their journals, the students drew and tried to write what they thought our mystery creatures would become. Ask your child what they think the mystery creatures will turn into. *REMINDERS:
-Library tomorrow -Heart for Heart Market tomorrow (bring your quarters!) -Our Assembly is on Friday, June 1 (10:00-10:30am) -Book Orders due on Friday, June 1 Today, the students were introduced to a new medium in Art, watercolor. We discovered that in order for the colour to show up on the paper, we needed to dilute the colour pigments in water. We spent some time reflecting on our learning about the land, then the students each chose one aspect of the land to paint. Do you remember the steps you had to follow to create our painting? *Reminders:

*REMINDERS: -Jumprope for Heart donations need to be submitted by May 30 (please return envelopes to class) -Assembly (Friday, June 1 @ 10:00am) -Heart to Heart Market- Today students were introduced to the cause we are donating to and watched a special presentation by the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Many of the students were inspired by the important work this organization is involved in. On Thursday, May 31 students are encouraged to bring in money (no more than $5) in exchange for tickets. Each ticket is 0.25 cents. Tickets can then be used at the market for face painting, games and buying handmade crafts made by some of our older students. The students were so excited to share stories about their long weekend. We spent a good part of our morning journaling about our adventures. We took our time to add detailed pictures and words/sentences. Ask your child what they journaled about today. We also continued exploring measurement by looking at a ruler and finding 10cm. A centimeter is unit of length. We observed that 1cm is about the width of our pinky finger. Ask your child what they had to do with a piece of 10cm string today. *REMINDERS:
-Library books due tomorrow -Celebration of Learning Assembly (Rooms 13/14) on Friday, June 1 from 10:00-10:30am in the gym -Jumprope for Heart donations due May 30 Today we continued our exploration in Measurement. - This week during gym, we've been trying a number of jumping activities to help us keep our hearts strong. We are also practicing skipping to raise money for those people whose hearts are not strong and healthy. Our school goal is $5000 and so we are hoping that everyone will join in to help us reach our goal. The easiest way to donate is online and all donations need to be in by May 30th. Thanks for all your support! -No school tomorrow and Monday for students -Heart to Heart Market: Please see letter below from Grade 3/4 team..... Bring your quarters! At Maple Ridge School we believe that developing citizenship through helping others is part of who we are. If you are new to our school, the Heart to Heart Market is a way for kids to think on a more global level and find ways that they can contribute to others in the world. This year the Market will be held May 31st from 1:30-3:00. Students in grade 3 and 4 run the Market and vote on a cause they would like to give the money they make. Last year, it was The Calgary Food Bank This year, we have decided to give all money raised to the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Each year the Grade 3 and 4 students create crafts such as bracelets, bookmarks, art cards, etc. that they can sell at the market. Some students have chosen to make other arcade type games that students or parents can play. A few days before the Market, Grade 3 and 4 teachers will distribute “Tickets” to each of the Homeroom classes. Any student who brings in money for the Market will be able to get 1 ticket for each 25c they bring in up to a maximum of 20 tickets. Students will get to go ‘shopping’ at the Marketplace on May 31st. (If you are unable to donate this year, each student will still get 4 tickets. We still want each student to experience the excitement of the Market. ) On the day of the Market, the grade 3s and 4s will be setting out a table or an activity where items may be purchased or played in increments of 1-3 tickets (any donation will be accepted). Students will get to go ‘shopping’ at the Marketplace using their tickets- with ALL proceeds going towards Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society. Parents and family are invited to come on the day of the Market to purchase tickets to buy items or play games and just experience the energy and excitement the students have for this cause. Start saving your quarters! They all add up. We look forward to being able to send our love and support…from our hearts to theirs. Maple Ridge students have an opportunity to really make a difference! Hope to see you all there. Sincerely, All the Maple Ridge students and teachers of Grade 3 and 4 Please note that Kindergarten will participate on the morning of May 31st. Please send UP TO $5.00 (20 tickets) in on this morning for your child to participate. Students will have a chance to play some (approximately 8) of the games and/or purchase some craft items. Parents do not need to attend this event, as students will participate with class in their 30 minute time slot that morning. You are welcome to bring your Kindergarten child back in the afternoon to participate with you, if you wish. This week our students started exploring different ways to measure objects. Today, we engaged in an activity called "Mystery String." Ask your child to tell you about this activity. Later, we took our learning to the outdoor classroom and looked for things that were "the same length, longer than and shorter than" our string. *REMINDER:
-If you haven't done so already, please return library books tomorrow On Friday, we kicked off the Jumprope for Heart fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. You child should have come home with an envelope with more information. Funds collected need to be submitted online by May 30th. Today, we started doing some jumping activities in Phys.Ed.

Ask your child to explain how it is different than the T chart and the Double T chart. What can you show on a Venn diagram that you can't on a T chart? Today, the students had the task to compare two animals that we learned about at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. What can they tell you about each one? What do they have in common? * REMINDER:
-Library books due tomorrow We are thrilled to have two players from the Calgary Roughnecks at our school this week. Bobby and Kellen gave our Kindergarten students an introduction to Lacrosse today. We learned that this game originated in Canada by the First Nations people. We were told that back then this game was played to settle disagreements. So instead of arguing, people would just play lacrosse! Here are some pictures of the students practicing some basic skills with their stick and ball: *REMINDERS:
